This week in university, We learnt about diversity. It’s rather important you see. Well at least it seemed so to me.
"Everyone should live in harmony, no matter what garishly bright colour they might be."
The question and title of this weeks lecture was "Who are your students and how do you know?"
This week's guest lecturer was Profesor Tanya Fitzgeraled who bought with her along with a New Zealand accent many fine opinions about diversity in the classroom.
Her lecture covered a wide field of anecdotes, examples and stratergies, but the ones that stuck most closely with me were.
As a teacher:
Understand your students.
Understand yourself.
Consider how you teach.
Consider what you teach.
Teachers....
Do more than teach.
Model social behaviour and expectations.
Are the role models for those in their classrooms and schools.
Must earn respect.
Set boundaries.
Make a difference in the lives of whom they come into contact.
Ways to connect with and understand your student.
Create a class slideshow.
Spin a classroom web.
Observe interactions.
Ask respectful questions.
Try not to make assumptions.
Try not to group students inappropriately.
Disrupted Schooling
"School matters to me, because the teacher knows my name."
Migrant children
Children from refugee background
Children from Chronic illness
Children kept at home by caregivers
Children who move around families
Children removed from school
Finally there was a quote from Hermann Hesse.
It is not our purpose to become each other, it is to recognize each other, to learn to see the other and honour him/her for what he/she is.
