Week 6 - Teachers Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct
Along with verbs, art and fractions, Teachers are also judged on their actions. Even if you want to snap a neck, Always treat your students with respect. Or you could soon be facing sanctions.
"Stuart thought he might have taken the Principle's metaphor a little far."
This weeks' lecture on teachers code of ethics and code of conduct was really insightful. Greg delivered a lecture which was a true eye opener, in regards to thing which I or anyone would have thought it was ok. Things such as relationship between teacher amnd student to start and end at just teaching, the whole idea of car pooling and a comforting hug were not appropriate.
Greg went through the moral issues (what ought one do? Socrates):
concerned with right conduct
distinction between right or wrong
decisions about our actions
decisions about professional morality
decisions about the morality of a lifestyle
The Victorian Teaching Profession Code of Ethics is a Legislation requirement which is based on three values underpinning the profession.
- Integrity - Respect -Responsibility
This code recognises the unique position of trust and influences a teacher holds. The lecture went through these in detail and how it is that we can carry these out. This code works as a guide for teachers (Values) and promotes public confidence in the profession. However, this code comes with its own delimmas in regards to the right thing to do in a situation will sometimes require the teacher to apply personal values in order to solve it.
Furthermore, Greg went through the Code of conduct highlighting the three sections under this:
- Professional conduct -Personal conduct -Professional competence
Greg went through these in more detail and the section which each one of these fall under.
More inportanly, Greg taught us a very valuable lesson.... We are not a friend or their councellors but professional teachers, and in order to protect ourselves we must never get ourselves in bad situations.
