Week 1 - Understanding Education

There was a Knight called Ken Robinson,
Who found education rather bothersome.
We focus too much on the traditional smarts,
And ignore the other creative arts.
That was the argument of the good Sir Ken Robinson.

"Laura wonders if she really understands Education."

This week Mr Powell spoke about assessments. He suggested that we think about all the teachers we have ever had and think of which one we would like to be like. He made a list of what an effective teacher is.

EFFECTIVE TEACHERS
Effective teachers know how students learn and build on the knowledge their students
already have.
Teachers have a strong grasp of the content of their discipline.
They use teaching strategies matched to the learning styles and needs of their students to
engage them with that content.
Purposeful teachers contextualise their teaching practices. They centre their teaching on
the experiences of their students, equipping them with knowledge and skills they can use
in everyday life.

After his brief lecture he showed us a video. 'Creatively Speaking: Sir Ken Robinson on the Power of the Imaginative Mind'
Sir Ken Robinson spoke about creativity in children and that the fact they grow out of it. He believes that this happens due to that teachers educate them out of their creativity as we are working in such a way that we believe that mistakes are the worse thing to make. We are set up to produce the next university graduate and to totally ignore any other subject that isn't on top of the hierachy. We focus on Maths and literature so hard that we forget that some children are creative.

I believe what he is implying is that students learn in their own way. They might learn through song, dance and not necessarily according to the hierachy that we have established. While some are "smart" others learn through creativity.
